Chapter 13

A doctor and a nurse whisked her into the ER on a gurney, firing questions at her as they rolled her toward an elevator.

“What’s your name?”

“How old are you?”

“How far along are you?”

“Any complications thus far in the pregnancy?”

“Who is your doctor?”

Chrissy did the best she could as she started to feel woozy. Christine Johnson. Twenty-eight. About seven and half months. No. Natalia Ashton. From the way the doctor and nurse kept glancing at each other, she knew that something was wrong, either with her or the baby. But she couldn’t muster the energy to ask.

She felt a gush of warmth between her legs, and she knew instinctively that she was bleeding harder. The edges of her vision began to grow dark. She was beginning to lose consciousness. Her baby! She had to stay awake for her baby. Chrissy rallied what little reserves she had and struggled to prop herself up on her elbows so she could get the doctor’s attention.

Suddenly there was a flurry of activity around her. She didn’t have a chance to speak. Instead, she was gently pushed back down to the gurney. A second later, she was transferred to an operating table. An oxygen mask was fitted around her mouth. Then everything went dark.

When Chrissy opened her eyes again, she was staring up at the harsh overhead lights of an unfamiliar room. Fear lanced through her as she struggled to put together what had happened. Everything felt different, but she couldn’t figure out why. Her brain felt fuzzy like she couldn’t pin down what she needed to. Thoughts slipped by her unceremoniously. She remembered that her water had broken, and Reggie rushed her to the hospital.

The baby! Her hands flew to her tender abdomen. She wasn’t pregnant anymore. Looking around the room, she could see that she was there alone. Thick gauze covered what she had to assume was her incision from a c-section. She had to get up and find her baby. When she tried to move, she realized that she couldn’t feel her legs.

Frantic, Chrissy began to pray. Lord, what is going on? Where is my baby? Please take care of us. Please be with us. Please send help. Amen.

Just as she was about to scream in frustration, the door to the room opened, and a nurse came in. Chrissy swore that the woman looked like an angel in her neon green scrubs. The woman glanced at a chart before approaching the bed.

“Hey, looks like you finally decided to wake up,” the nurse said. “You had a rough time coming out of the anesthesia. Do you feel sick to your stomach at all?” When Chrissy shook her head, the woman continued, “I’m Lola. And you are...Christine?”

“Chrissy. Where is my baby?”

Lola’s eyes widened, and she pressed a hand to her chest. “Of course, I’m so sorry. I should have led with that. Your little girl is fine, but they had to airlift her to Denver.”

All the information swam through Chrissy’s mind. “Denver? But why? I mean, you just said that she was okay.
